The next Finncon!

Posted

Sadly, unlike we previously planned the next Finncon will not be in Tampere in 2021.

The reason for this is the COVID-19 situation in the Pirkanmaa area that would not allow us to organize Finncon as it should be. You can read more about this on the page for Finncon 2021: 2021.finncon.org/?lang=en

The next Finncon will therefore be in 2022 in the capital city area and the committee for that year will announce details later. Hopefully, we can see everyone then face to face!

PS. The videos for the Finncon 2020 programme will be released by summer of 2021!

Winner of the Atorox Award will be announced in Virtual Finncon

The winner of the Atorox Award for the best science fiction or fantasy short story will be announced in Virtual Finncon on 10.-12.7.2020. This will be the first time that the Atorox will be given out virtually.

The Atorox Award is given to the best Finnish science fiction or fantasy short story that was published during the previous calendar year. The winner is decided by a public vote from a list of nominees formed by jury and fandom votes. The Atorox Award was first given out in 1983 and is named after the Atorox character created by Aarne "Outsider" Haapakoski.

The results of the Nova writing competition will be also announced in Virtual Finncon

As it is the tradition, the results of the Nova writing competition will be announced at the same time as the winner of the Atorox Award. Nova is organized by Turku Science Fiction Society, Science culture cabinet of the University of Turku, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of Finland and is a writing competition with a feedback format.

We regret to announce that - due to the current situation with the Corona virus around the world - Tampere Finncon 2020 will have to be postponed until summer 2021. The theme for Tampere Finncon is time and we’ll be bending and warping time by moving the convention to 2021! The exact dates will be confirmed during spring 2020. The Guests of Honor for Finncon 2021 will be M.R.Carey, Diane Duane, Helena Waris and Vesa Sisättö.

We will be organizing a small-scale virtual Finncon on July 10-12 2020. The program for this Virtual Finncon will be organized during summer 2020, and the program team will be in touch with some of the program volunteers about this soon. The aim of the virtual Finncon is to showcase current topics in speculative fiction, in literature and other forms of media. There will also be a virtual Artists’ Alley. The Academic program of Finncon will organise at least the Fantastic paper workshop (http://finfar.org/kutsu-finfarin-fantastiseen-tekstityopajaan-2/).

More information about the teaser Finncon will be released in summer 2020.

Capital region Finncon will also be postponed

Finncon in the capital region, which was originally going to happen in 2021, will also be postponed to summer 2022. Finncon 2022 will be organized at the Aalto-university in Espoo on July 8-10, 2022.
